How To Get Polish Citizenship by Descent

In this article, we will explore the subject of Polish Citizenship by Descent and how to secure it. Polish Citizenship equals European citizenship, and as such, having it opens Your Gateway to Europe. You will enjoy the privileges of free travel within the Schengen Area, unrestricted work and education across the continent and in some member states, additional rights. Polish Citizenship by Descent is one of three methods of obtaining citizenship - the other being a Presidential grant and residency.

So how exactly do you get it? First of all, you will need a document proving your ancestor(s) originated from Poland. Ideally, the document should be at least from the 20th century, as Poland only regained independence in 1918, after 123 years of being ruled by Austria, Germany and Russia. This is also why, in some documents, your ancestors might have claimed they come from those countries, politically speaking, despite Polish-sounding names and using the Polish language. The document should be an original or certified copy with proper authentication, and ideally issued by a Polish authority. If you do not have old Polish passports or IDs in your family's history chest, do not worry, our team will gladly look for those documents in the Polish State Archives and other institutions. Then, you will need to secure documents confirming that you are a descendant of your Polish ancestors - birth and marriage certificates. In some cases, additional documents might be required, but our team will also gladly provide guidelines and examples of those.
Once the documents are collated, we will translate them on your behalf to Polish language. We use sworn translators approved by the Polish Ministry of Justice. We will apply to the Provincial Office ("Urząd Wojewódzki") for them to recognise your claim, and at the same time, we will register your birth and marital status or name changes with the Registry Office here. This would be required later on for your passport. This way, you get a full service that allows you to get the Polish-EU passport without any further issues or headaches down the line. Polish Citizenship is in high demand, with our passport being the #8 in strength in the world, so please be advised that you will need to wait some time for the results. The number of applications grows every year, currently being about 30 thousand a year. Nevertheless, the beauty of doing the process is that it is your birthright; you do not have to reside or visit Poland at all (if you do not wish to, however, we do have some beautiful landscapes and sights!), and you do not have to speak the language. The general rule for Polish Citizenship by Descent is that you were born with it, and the government's job is just to recognise the claim, with the presented evidence.
